How to measure the opening for PVC windows yourself

For the new window to fit the size of the opening exactly and not cause problems with installation and later operation, the greatest attention must be paid to the measurements. Usually this task is entrusted to a specialist, but you can also do it yourself if you wish.
Valent MD tells you how to measure your PVC windows yourself. These tips will help you when you install window systems on your own, and they will also be useful for monitoring the work of third-party craftsmen.
Important note!
Before moving on to the measuring process, make sure you have the necessary tools at hand: a tape measure, a pen, and a sheet of paper for noting down the dimensions.
Case I: Measuring openings – New construction
If the house is still under construction, and the walls are ready and the openings are finished, you can measure and order windows in the following configuration:
- 1.To establish the height, measure vertically at 3 points (left side, middle, and right side). Note down the resulting numbers.
- 2.To establish the width, measure horizontally at 3 points (top, middle, and bottom). Note down the resulting numbers.
- 3.Measure the thickness of the walls and note down the results.
It is important to make sure that the dimensions and location of each opening match the project, and that the dimensional deviations do not exceed 2-3 cm.

Case II: Measuring openings – Buildings with old windows
In this case, it is impossible to measure the openings directly, so all the visible elements of the window are measured — using these, the window company's specialist will be able to determine the size of the opening itself.
You measure the size of the opening on the outside, then of the inner opening. These measurements are taken from plaster to plaster. Repeat this process both vertically and horizontally. Note down the results.

Case III: Measuring openings – Old buildings with wooden windows
In this case, special attention is needed. The dimensions of the opening measured from the inside are noticeably larger than those measured from the outside. As a result, not only aesthetic problems can arise, but also problems related to the appearance of mould and condensation.
It is best to seek a specialist's advice. But if you do not have this option, measure the outer opening — the height of the opening at 2 points (left, right) and the width along the top and bottom edges, from plaster to plaster. Note down the results.
